Tauranga Businesses’ Achievements Contributed To Their Immense Success

“Opportunities don’t happen. You create them.” This famous quote by Chris Grosser illustrates the amazing success stories right here in the heart of BOP.

Bake shack and Trevalyans are small local businesses within Tauranga that have experienced great success and have been recognised in the Tauranga Business awards run by TBC in the past few years.

What exactly have these businesses done to rise to the level of much larger prominent businesses in the city?

The Bake Shack is a small bakery situated on Mount Maunganui and has been serving delicious traditional baked goods since 1999. For almost 20 years, the bakery has built a large wholesale supply business so that kiwis can access their baked goods in any location.

Trevelyan is a kiwifruit and avocado packhouse located in Te puke. Trevalyans owns one of the largest single-site storage and cooling packhouse in New Zealand and has strong partnerships with kiwifruit growing companies.

These businesses have come a long way by continuously aiming to improve their business processes to gain a competitive advantage.

So what has contributed to the success of these businesses?

Bake Shack Implemented Kaizen (continuous improvement)

Bake Shack won the continuous improvement/lean award for going above and beyond in implementing Kaizen, with a focus on improving the production processes of their baked goods. Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) is a strategy in which employees at all levels of the organisation work collaboratively to achieve regular, incremental improvements to the manufacturing process.

According to Marty Mayston, the founder of Bake Shack, “any organisation producing and distributing 10,000 to 15,000 pies requires an engaged team and well-developed processes.” Using lean procedures has enabled bake shack to reduce waste (Muda) while maintaining consistently high-quality baked goods for their customers.

Tauranga Business Charter stated that when organisations place an emphasis on lean in their manufacturing procedures, they will improve performance, quality, customer experience, and reduce operational costs. In this case, Bake Shack has succeeded by efficiently handling large order capacities and effectively delivering goods to their customers’ doors on time.

For businesses that have been inspired by the success of bake shacks and want to apply a more lean approach to their manufacturing activities. The following are the advantages of lean operations as summarised by lean business survey respondents.

  1. Better Manage Process Complexity
  2. Improved Management of Changing Priorities
  3. Enhanced Project Visibility at the Team Level
  4. Increased Team Productivity
  5. Reduced Lead Time
  6. Increased Customer Satisfaction

Trevalyan: Strengthened Corporate leadership

It goes without saying that leadership is critical in developing and enhancing teamwork and ensuring that team members have a sense of motivation, purpose, and direction. TBC presented Trevalyan with the Corporate Leadership Award, which recognises businesses that make a concerted effort to maintain the highest level of employee satisfaction.

During the unprecedented events of Covid-19, Trevalyan managers and executive staff worked extensively to ensure that they provided as much support to their staff.

A Trevelyan representative stated that the company is, “leading the charge with their response to Covid-19 and how they are managing to keep their people safe in a difficult environment.” The representative goes on to say that their company had focused heavily on community support across all of their business functions to ensure that operations ran smoothly.

Effective leadership has been shown to be a driver of success, as seen in Trevelyan, where the company successfully captured productivity and boosted morale in its team members during a difficult time period, ultimately giving Trevelyan an advantage over its competitors.

These success stories provide insight into what other businesses in Tauranga or even New Zealand should consider in order to pave their own path to success. For Tauranga businesses, Auctus is a great place to receive assistance in sparking success.
